0-4 Panthers look to Cup for Inspiration

Despite losing 6-4 to Jamaica Inn "Dons" in the league last week, the Panthers' squad are hopeful of pulling off a minor giant-killing performance in the Ben Truman Cup tonight. The Panthers make the trip to Hollingbury "A", who are currently 6th in Division Two, looking to galvanise their season with a good cup run.

6-4 Scoreline Hurts Panthers Again

For the third week running the Panthers found themselves one point short of a valiant draw and first league points of the season. Former UoB Premier League competitor Rob Olley led the Seasiders to a narrow 6-4 victory over the Panthers in Week Three and thus condemning his former team to their third straight defeat. The mood in the camp is still buoyant despite the latest set-back, a healthy leg difference shows that despite being at the foot of the table, the Panthers are not too far off the rest of the teams in the league.

The Panthers face Jamaica Inn "Dons" tomorrow at home, with President Will Burley hoping to end their losing league record before the Ben Truman Cup starts the following week.

Despite welcoming a number of new faces to the team in the week, the Panthers only just managed to field a full side to face 'The Animals' in Week Two (a huge thank-you to Tom for coming into the team at such late notice). In a tight and fairly even match-up, the Panthers were desperately unlucky to fall the wrong side of a 6-4 scoreline for the second week running.

The team will travel to Newmarket in Week Three to face former UoB Premier League competitior Rob Olley. The Green Arrow's team are unbeaten so far this season - winning 17 legs out of a possible 20.

New signings set to feature for Panthers...

Will 'The Hitman' Burley is pleased with the recent growth of the Panthers' squad, a week after their first league fixture. The Hitman brings in four new faces to the squad and is hopeful that more students will join the team in the forth-coming weeks after successful promotional events around Freshers Fair.

Chairman Will Burley was full of praise for his team's efforts in their first league game of the season. Fielding a relatively makeshift side on the night, the Panthers went down 6-4 to Preston Brewery Tap "B", winning 2 doubles matches and 2 singles matches.

The Panthers host Moulsecoomb LC "Animals" next week, who drew with Hikers Rest in their first fixture.

Matt Waters is looking for more students to join the Panthers ahead of a brand new season. Although he is hopeful that the core of last years UoB Premier League competitors will create the foundations of the 2010-2011 team, Tank needs to recruit more players to meet the demands of playing weekly in the City of Brighton Darts League.

Panthers sign up to City of Brighton Darts League

Brighton Panthers will make their league debut in Division 3 of the City of Brighton Darts League on September 28th. The Panthers will start their season at home against Preston Brewery Tap "B".

Who is the best finisher?

It would be difficult to pick out anyone other than Jason for this one. He is really sharp on his finishing and particularly clinical around the 10 or 6. He has won the most legs of anyone this season so the statistics would back this up. But on his day, Needles can be just as good, especially on double 10 – I have seen him on a number of occasions casually switch from 28 (double 14) to double 10 in two darts this season. He seems to take it out on every occasion too – he’s the type of player that just plays the board and doesn’t get too phased on doubles.

Most consistent scorer?

I think this a tricky one. Again, the statistics will point towards Jason. But really anyone in the league can pepper the treble 20 when in rhythm. A-Train hit a splendid 174 in the league and Luke became the latest player to hit a 180 during the Graduate Show last week.

Best throw?

Karl has a very relaxed fluid action that is very easy on the eye. I rarely see it tighten up in matches. What makes it doubly impressive is that he frequently finds himself using the pubs or another teammates set of darts because he has forgot to pack his own. Sometimes the darts have three different styles of flights or stems, but to Karl’s credit they always come out the hand cleanly and fly true to his action.

Who is the most natural showman?

When he’s playing well, Will lets off a lot of emotion. He gave me an absolute hammering the other week – hitting an 18 dart leg and back to back checkouts of 112 and 92. He was living every moment of it with fist pumps and shouts of come on. No-one was watching or at the least bit interested in our game, but that didn’t matter to him. Love to see him play against a professional on a stage to see how he’d play it then.

Who is the worst loser?

Probably Will again. If he loses a game that he thinks that he should have won he’ll be unapproachable for at least 20 minutes afterwards. There’s nothing terribly unsporting about it, he will say well played to his opponent and shake their hand, but he will have to leave the room to prevent himself irrupting or something. He knows that he is capable of producing some awesome darts on his day, but unfortunately for Will, he’s failed to really show his best form in the league.

Who is the best at dishing out banter?

Beers, Balls and not Bantaray! This could be anyone or no-one. Karl has some of the funniest Facebook Profile Pictures in the group and probably has the best sense of humour in the group. He’s a die-hard Gunner so he does give Tank a lot of stick when he can. Ace is very funny – but I don’t always understand what he saying because of his very thick Irish accent.

Toughest opponent to play?

I found Ace really difficult to play whether it would be on a Tuesday night at the Franklin or in the UoB Premier League. It’s because he often appears as if he is not concentrating on the darts at all. He’ll be chatting away to you whilst you’re getting ready to throw and it’s seems to relax players to the point where they lose their focus. If you happen to be plodding along slowly in a leg, Ace has the potential to pull out a heavy ton from seemingly nowhere and put you under real pressure. Even at a double, he may hit two off the board, but his third dart will either be in or just on the wire. Basically it’s not a comfortable game when you’re playing Ace. He got a draw with Tank at the start of the season and also took legs off all of the top four, so I’d say it would have to be him.

Most memorable UoB moment of the year?

Tank made the third round of the Rileys Darts Tournament back in January, knocking out one particular player who was tipped to make the semi-finals along the way. If the committee want to nominate a health and safety officer, someone responsible for rescuing paralytic individuals, carry you home half way across Brighton after a session of drinking and darts then I’d advise someone like A-Train. The Hitman will support such a proposal. An absolute hero, sent from heaven wasn’t it Will?

Biggest moaner?

Again Tank is not a fan of authority and any rule introduced to the league without his approval – or so I Will tells me? They both like to tell me that I have made a mistake here and there. I take it on the chin because they are often right. The club is in very good hands with these two next year.

Most improved player?

Needles. He finished the season really strong beating Tank and Karl in his last couple of games. Considering that he has been playing darts for less than a year he has shown the biggest improvement of all. Then again, from being stranded bottom of the table to finishing comfortably around mid-table Luke pulled some wonderful performances out of the bag to finish really strong. He destroyed me, beat Jack and Andrew too and took a valiant draw with Jason.

Best Dart Player and WAG combination?

Well the face of UoB Darts, Jack Chambers lives the lavish dart Dart Player-WAG lifestyle so well. Jetting his girlfriend around the world to watch his games. Matt and Ellie are a lovely couple, Ellie is probably the most regular darts WAG of the group.

Player to look out for next season?

Tommy ‘The Bullet’ Streets is a bit of a rough diamond. I think with a bit more time on the oche he could well outdo Needles achievements this season. To be honest though, there is only Matt, Jason and I that are graduating this year so the likes of Karl, Tank, Rob will be strong contenders for the title. I expect Will to come back stronger and push the top runners all the way, the same too for Andrew really. I also hope Luke takes his form from the end of this season into the start of next.

Who do you think will win the Play-off’s?

The man on form is Jason, I think the confidence of not being beaten so far this season will count for something. But now it is essentially a straight knock-out format to finish. It will be interesting to see how this affects the matches and players because I’m sure everyone will feel nervous at some point in the next two games. I suppose if anyone can beat Jason, Tank is the man to do so. I still fancy Jason to win it, but Tank has a little edge over him that others don’t. That game will be very interesting to watch, equally I think the game between Rob and I will be close if we both bring our A-game to the oche. He should have beaten me when we played earlier in the league, he owes me a hiding! Anyone of the four who pulls off two back-to-back victories in a longer game deserves the title in my eyes. Whoever has the best rhythm and sharpest on his doubles will prove very difficult to stop.

Who loves a woody?

The game Wood-Shot is such a wonderful game that really unites the group. It is a game where the best players can easily finish bottom and vice versa. Line up some Cactus Jack shots and see the Woodies rain down. J-Bird is partial to the odd chalky too!

UoB Committee Announced for 2010 - 2011

Elections have passed in the build up to the Burt Brill and Cardens Graduate Show this Friday. Will Burley has been elected as the new President of the society and a majority vote has been reach in all other positions as well. The results of the elections are as followed:

Director of Darts > Matt Waters

The Director of Darts will be responsible for all matters that take place at the oche. Matt will work alongside the secretary to organise matches with other universities and teams locally and nationally (if desired). He will be responsible for selecting squads for matches, as well as organising training sessions.

Club Secretary > Luke Manterfield

Luke will provide a tangible link from the information generate between the committee and its members. He will have the opportunity to take over the UoB Facebook account to publicise such information. The secretary will assist the Director of Darts to organise matches (home and away) and be responsible for all administrative duties that go with external league applications – this includes registration and familiarising oneself with any rules that the club will need to comply with. Luke will offer full support to President throughout the year, especially regarding UoB Premier League, notifying players of matches and keeping a log of results and statistics.

Treasurer > Andrew Pragner

The Treasurer will manage a separate and specific UoB bank account. Andrew will work with President to keep a log of the financial support received during the course of the year, collect and distribute funds (fees, subscriptions, tickets, prize money etc), notifying the committee of any problems or issues regarding payments that occur within the group and between its members.

Rob Olley is also recognised as an Advisory Member of the new committee.

The Hitman Elected as New UoB President

Will 'The Hitman' Burley gains the majority vote from his peers to become the UoB President for 2010-2011. The position will be vacated by Mount on June 11th 2010.

Duties and Responsibilties...

• Maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for both current and new members to play darts in.
• Ensure that the club is run efficiently and committee members fulfil their duties.
• Chiefly responsible for the safety of the society and its members.
• Continue the success of the society from the previous year and, in the best interest of its members, attempt to move it forward.
• This would mean developing existing connections with Franklin Tavern and Rileys.
• As well as making new connections that will expand the group and increase its appeal to UoB students and Brighton's wider community.
• Continually present ideas to members regarding future plans for the club.
• Secure funding and sponsorship where possible.
• Plan and arrange social events for the club and its members.
• Organise and present the club at the Fresher’s Fair next year.
• In charge of the UoB Premier League – manage, design and uphold rules (assisted by secretary).
• Oversee the next elections at in 2011.

Nathan Breaks UoB Pebble Beach Record

Nathan Smith smashed the UoB Pebble Beach record by carding an stunning score of -31 from the two rounds played. With all the UoB competitors playing on the two boards at the Graduate Show, Nathan finished a full 14 shots ahead of John Everest in second.

The game of Pebble Beach is quite a favourite amongst the UoB players, right up there with a the classic game of Wood-Shot. Introduced by Will Burley a couple of months ago, the game scores exactly like a game of golf, where points are taken off your score the better you play on the board. Players take it in turn to aim at the numbers from 1 all the way through to 18 (19, 20 and Bull are used when a play-off is required). On each visit a player must throw all three darts at the number (or hole) that they are on.

The scoring works as followed:

+1 = Player does not hit a single dart in number aiming for.

PAR = One dart lands in the single area of the number aiming for.

-1 = One dart lands in either the double or treble of the number aiming for.

-2 = Three darts land in the single area of the number aiming for.

-3 = A combination of two darts landing in a treble or double

(could be two trebles, two doubles or one double and one treble).

-4 = A combination of all three darts landing in a treble or double

(could be three trebles, three doubles, one double and two trebles or one treble and two doubles).

Bantaray Hits 180 at UoB Graduate Show

Luke Manterfield gets the Burt Brill and Cardens Graduate Show off to an absolute flyer with a stunning 180 - hit within the first 15 mins of practice. Blissfully unaware that the first dart had landed in the red bit, Luke continued to place two more in the 60. It wasn't until Tank, who was scoring at the time, started celebrating that Bantaray realised what he had achieved.

Luke adds his name to the growing list of UoB Players that have nailed a 180 in practice. It is only a matter of time before one is scored in a competitive fixture.

To commemorate Bantaray's achievement, the board will be presented to Luke when the Graduate Show closes.

A Face for Photoshop

Jack Chambers has been a part of some memorable moments this year in the UoB Premier League. He has hit as many 61+ checkouts as anybody else this season and no-one can forget the vital part he played in the longest leg recorded in the competition against Luke. But did anyone notice the subtle photoshop work on the previous post concerning his new modelling work for Logo Sports and UoB Panthers?

J-Bird Becomes Face of UoB Darts

Jack Chambers has been a little quiet at the oche in the last few weeks, what with exams and jetting around the world to spend time with his girlfriend. But J-Bird has been putting in the hours with the design team at Logo Sports (company producing UoB's brand new dart shirts) and also in front of the camera showcasing the latest UoB merchandise. J-Bird (pictured below) is modelling the beanie he has made his trademark at darts practice this season. He will be hoping to take his modelling form back to the oche as he looks to finish off his season in a bit of style.

As the epic series of Lost made its final twist, the UoB Premier League is shaping up for one final twist of itself. With all positions to play for there is plenty at stake this final week of the season.

The Green Arrow fires his final darts in the UoB Premier League

Rob Olley signs off this 2010 campaign with a draw against Will 'The Hitman' Burley at Wood-Shot Wednesday. The Green Arrow needed to comeback twice in a real ding-dong of a match to claim a point against the Hitman, who was having better luck with his doubles in this encounter.

Rob, who plays in the Brighton Leagues has been a tremendous asset to the UoB Premier League this year. Although his commitment to his Brighton Team is of a priority, he has done wonderfully well to play in all of the Wood-Shot Wednesday's and complete his league matches before anyone else. With his contacts in the Brighton leagues, hopefully The Green Arrow will switch from player to agent in the forthcoming weeks and months and bring a few more players to the UoB next season.

Needles makes his point in the UoB Premier League

It is no a secret within the UoB Premier League that Matt 'Needles' Brindley is one of the most improved players in the competition this year. Like all players, Matt has his off days - but what makes him a dangerous competitor is that the standard of his darts on the better days are getting better and better as the season reaches its climax.

With two wins out of two, this round of Wood-Shot Wednesday easily belonged to Matt, who started off the day with a convincing 3-1 win against Adam 'A-Train' James. After racing into a 3-0 lead, A-Train pinched the final leg as both players missed darts at a double.

In his second match Needles went up against an inform Matt 'Tank' Waters, playing for a place in the top four. Tank had the better of the opening leg but failed to leave himself on decent double. As soon as Needles lined up double 20, the man from Hassockes made Tank pay and edged into an early lead. Confidence continued to grow for Needles as he increased his scoring and applied further pressure on his opponent, closing out the next leg in 29 darts with double 6.

Tank took the third to keep any hopes of a draw alive but then failed to get off to a good start in the fourth. With Needles was left on 28, Tank stepped up to the oche looking at shanghai for a share of the points and also the chance to knock Ace off the top of the Whitlock award. The width of the wire was all that separated Tank from a splendid checkout and a crucial point in the context of his league campaign. After seeing Tank come so close to nailing the 120 finish, Needles seemed relaxed and completely in control of the situation as he switched casually from looking at double 14, to hitting 8 and double 10 in two darts. There are certain areas on the board that you just fancy Needles when he's aiming at doubles; 20, 10 or 6 being the main ones. Unfortunately for Tank these were the areas that Needles struck heavily in the match.

Tank was left bitterly disappointed with the result as he is now reliant on other results to get into the top four. Needles became the third player in the UoB Premier League to be accompanied to a match with a WAG, a trend set early on by the Chelsea's Prodigal Son, Jack Chambers. Needles claims his biggest scalp of the season and looks forward to finishing his season on a high against an unbeaten Karl.
